It may be noted that the books with serial numbers 3 and 6 are not written by Ranganathan. In this, Ranganathan has been treated as a subject, whereas Ranganathan is the author of the rest of the books. The author catalogue will take entries at 1,2,4, and 5 only, whereas the name catalogue will take all these in one alphabetical sequence.
All the merits and demerits of the author catalogue are present in the name catalogue. But it has an additional benefit: information about the books written by an author and all the books written on him as subject or title are made available in one place. It has an additional limitation also. Since it is a mixed catalogue, sometimes confusion may arise if a particular entry for the author, the author treated as a title, and the author treated as a subject are arranged in one alphabetical sequence.
