A university library is a library that is part of a higher education institution, typically a college or university. These libraries provide a wide range of resources, services, and facilities to support the academic programs and research activities of the institution. University libraries offer access to a vast collection of resources, including books, journals, research papers, and multimedia materials. They also provide study spaces, research support services, and access to technology resources, such as computers, printers, and scanners. University libraries may also have special collections of rare and unique materials, collaborative spaces that encourage creativity and innovation, and outreach and engagement opportunities for the wider community. Overall, university libraries play a crucial role in the academic success of students and faculty members, providing the necessary resources and support for learning, research, and innovation.
Functions of University Library
- By procuring a comprehensive range of documents, including books, manuscripts, journals, magazines, newspapers, etc., on various subjects;
- To organize the huge collection of documents, it keeps them in different sections on the basics of their categorization like a textbook section, a reference section, a journal section, a thesis section;
- It provides the facility of interlibrary loan to its users if a document desired by the user is not available in the library;
- A modern university library interacts with different information networks to give more users easy access to e-sources/data so that they can access the desired information even from their workplace. For example, in India, university libraries use the facility of INFLIBNET for the same purpose;
- It also provides entertainment and healthy leisure to users by providing different newspapers, magazines, short story books, internet facilities, etc.;
- It gives user orientation training to newly enrolled users to make them feel at home and to acquaint them with the library system so that they can make maximum use of library services;
- With the help of a display of new arrivals, old book exhibitions, information bulletins about new library services, etc., it keeps the users updated with the library activities;
- It provides reference service through the reference section to establish contact between the right reader and the right document in a personal way to attract more users.
A University library is a library or group of libraries established, maintained, and administered by a university to meet the needs of its students and academic staff members. Materials selection policies of University Libraries are:
- The library must select and purchase adequate materials for each curriculum and essential materials concerning fields not covered in the curriculum, also called recreational and leisure reading.
- A good volume of periodicals, government documents (both old and foreign countries), research reports, doctoral dissertations, newspapers, maps, micro-production, etc., should be collected for a research project.
- The librarian must select the material well before the clientele’s needs in cooperation with library staff. Faculty participation in selection should be encouraged.
